The Best Car Movies Ever

Picture of Back to the Future Movie

Do you fancy a high octane movie but you've run out of ideas? Look no further than this list of the best car movies ever. Car chases, gritty storylines, beautiful cars, sexy girls and of course the clumsy cop cars colliding into each other. We've built up this list but it's by no means exhaustive - feel free to email us if you think you know a movie which is a deserved addition.

Best Car Movies List: (in no particular order)

Ronin Movie Cover

Ronin: (1998) | rating: 15

A freelancing former US intelligence agent tries to track down a mysterious package that is wanted by both the Irish and the Russians. (122 mins.)

AutoSnout Says:

We think this is one of the best car chase movies. Super real European car chases galore. Check out De Niro's acting when he's trying to look like he's driving in the car chases - laughable.

Bullitt Movie Cover

Bullitt: (1968) | rating: 15

An all guts, no glory San Francisco cop becomes determined to find the underworld kingpin that killed the witness in his protection. (114 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

For us, not as good as it is hyped up to be. Better the second time you watch it. Cool guy Steve McQueen is overshadowed for a change by the 'Bullitt' Ford Mustang and the menacing GTO in the famous long distance street chase.

Vanishing Point Movie Cover

Vanishing Point: (1971) | rating: 18

Kowalski works for a car delivery service. He takes delivery of a 1970 Dodge Challenger to take from Colorado to San Francisco... (99 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

A great car chase movie with a crazy storyline. We like the blonde almost as much as the 1970 Dodge Challenger.

Cannonball Movie Cover

Cannonball Run: (1981) | rating: PG

A wide variety of eccentric competitors participate in a wild and illegal cross-country car race. (95 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

It looked like the cast including Burt Reynolds had fun on this movie and it shows. A rare opportunity to see some early 80's japanese metal in action via courtesy of Mitsubishi. A light-hearted comedy car caper that even James Bond drops in for a blast.

Grand Prix Movie Cover

Grand Prix: (1966) | rating: PG

American Grand Prix driver Pete Aron is fired by his Jordan-BRM racing team after a crash at Monaco that injures his British teammate... (176 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

Classic Single Seater action which is a pleasant change from the usual street races and cop chases.

The Gumball Rally Movie Cover

The Gumball Rally: (1976) | rating: PG

A disparate group of drivers take part in a secret and illegal cross country road race. (105 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

The wacky film that popularised the Gumball Rally of today. Watch out for the Ferrari Daytona vs AC Cobra 427.

Two Lane Black Top Movie Cover

Two Lane Black Top: (1971) | rating: 15

Story of two men drag racing across the USA in a primer grey 55 chevy. Wilson is the mechanic, James Taylor is the driver. (102 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

A drag racing road trip in a properly raw '55 hot rod vs a shiney new 1970 GTO with a weird owner at the helm.

Smokey and the Bandit Movie Cover

Smokey and the Bandit: (1977) | rating: PG

The Bandit is hired on to run a tractor trailer full of beer over county lines in hot pursuit by a pesky sheriff. (96 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

Another Burt Reynolds car movie on this list, this time he's in the now legendary Firebird which perfectly suited the moustached main man. Not only will you want a Pontiac Firebird but a CB radio to go in it for those long journeys.

Gone in Sixty Seconds Movie Cover

Gone in Sixty Seconds: (2000) | rating: 15

A retired master car thief must come back to the industry and steal 50 cars with his crew in one night to save his brother's life. (118 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

Easy watching car movie based loosely on the original Gone in 60 Seconds - we prefer this version. The pimped 'Eleanor' Mustang is one of 50 star cars we would all love to own. It's also got a great soundtrack that should suit most tastes.

Gone in 60 Seconds Movie Cover

Gone in 60 Seconds: (1974) | rating: 15

Insurance investigator Maindrian Pace and his team lead double-lives as unstoppable car thieves. When a South American drug lord pays Pace to steal 48 cars for him. (118 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

Don't expect too much from this film but a 40 minute continuous car chase with more car wrecks than a salvage yard.

The Fast and Furious Movie Cover

The Fast and Furious: (2001) | rating: 15

An undercover cop infiltrates an underworld subculture of Los Angeles street racers looking to bust a hijacking ring, and soon begins to question his loyalties when his new street racing friends become the prime suspects. (106 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

The film that influenced a generation of tuners and pimpers wanting a Skyline, Supra, American Muscle etc.. Oh! and some NOS. A cheezy and colourful car movie that divides opinion.

American Graffiti Movie Cover

American Graffiti: (1973) | rating: 15

A couple of high school grads spend one final night cruising the strip with their buddies before they go off to college. (110 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

A hot rod laden peek back in time to the early 1960's when teens could afford to drive stylish rust-free american automobile's. See if you can spot several actors and budding directors in their early careers.

The Blues Brothers Movie Cover

The Blues Brothers: (1980) | rating: 15

Jake Blues, just out from prison, puts together his old band to save the Catholic home where he and brother Elwood were raised. (133 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

We've still to watch this movie. But we've been told its a cracker, so it's the next on our watch list. Watch this space.

The Italian Job Movie Cover

The Italian Job: (1969) | rating: 15

Comic caper movie about a plan to steal a gold shipment from the streets of Turin by creating a traffic jam. (99 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

A classic British movie with some classic British cars ranging from the Mini to an E Type Jaguar. Cheer yourself up with this 1960's car movie from the top drawer.

Mad Max Movie Cover

Mad Max: (1979) | rating: 18

A vengeful Australian policeman sets out to avenge his partner, his wife and his son whom were murdered by a motorcycle gang in retaliation for the death of their leader. (88 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

If you like your movie cars to be pristine and rust free then this is not the film for you. If you like a V8 with some patina then look no further than this post apocalyptic aussie road movie.

Mad Max 2 Movie Cover

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) | rating: 18

In the post-apocalyptic Australian wasteland, a cynical drifter agrees to help a small, gasoline rich, community escape a band of bandits. (95 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

Forget Concept Cars, this is a peak into the future of motoring. Fuel is scarce but the gas guzzling V8 is still the weapon of choice.

2 Fast 2 Furious Movie Cover

2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) | rating: 15

Former cop, Brian O'Conner is finally arrested after letting his leader escape the law. To avoid the consequences, he must now work with an old college friend and help the police arrest a local drug exporter. (107 mins.)

AutoSnout says:

The inevitable sequel to The Fast and Furious. Just as cheesy as the first and with just as much customised metal. Watch out for the strange Mitsubishi with the Impreza flat four soundtrack.
